Recent events, such as the remnants of Hurricane Ida, have shown that a significant number of homes affected by flooding were not in a flood zone, and the recovery process is challenging and expensive. Protecting your assets and being financially prepared doesn’t have to be difficult or a nuisance. There are small steps you can take to protect your assets when disaster strikes.

Remember, being prepared for a disaster is like being prepared for any other important event in life.

Watch This Brief Video

Being financially prepared can seem like a daunting task. Less daunting is watching this short video from FEMA. It helps explain why financial preparedness is so important.

Disasters can happen anytime and anywhere. You can protect yourself and your finances by planning ahead. A weekend of prep now can save you frustration and money later.

Cover Your Assets and Learn About Flood Insurance.

Do homeowner or renter insurance policies cover flooding?

No. Homeowners’ or renters’ policies do not cover flooding.

Unfortunately, many do not find out until it is too late. Learn more myths and facts about flood insurance.

Remember, it doesn’t take much water to cause a lot of damage. Just one inch of water can cause $25,000 of damage to your home.

Take a Small Step and Document

Take photos or videos of rooms in your home, showing what you own. This can be used as documentation if you ever need to file a claim.

Keep your receipts for large items as well. Take an inventory of your household documents, contacts and valuables.

Are you still unsure what documents you will need? You can download a handy checklist.

You're Almost There

Take the time now to collect and protect your critical documents, and it will give you peace of mind. Doing so after a disaster could be very difficult.

Completing an Emergency Financial First Aid Kit (EFFAK) can help you have what you need – when you need it – in one place. Use the EFFAK to identify your important documents, medical records, and household contracts.

Download the EFFAK for additional guidance on collecting, storing, and safeguarding all of your important information. Completing your EFFAK will give you the confidence to know all your records are stored in one place if an emergency happens.
